In 2023, Vietnam exported a total of 264,094 tons of various types of pepper, including 236,148 tons of black pepper and 27,946 tons of white pepper. The overall export turnover reached 906.5 million USD, with black pepper accounting for 770.6 million USD and white pepper reaching 135.9 million USD. Compared to 2022, the export volume increased by 13.8%, but the export turnover decreased by 8.0%. The average export price for black pepper was 3,585 USD per ton, and for white pepper, it was 5,091 USD per ton. Compared to 2022, the export prices for black and white pepper decreased by 420 USD and 635 USD per ton respectively.

Asia remained the largest export market for Vietnamese pepper, capturing 52.7% of the market share. Compared to 2022, the export volume to Asia increased by 29.6%. China was the leading market with 60,135 tons, accounting for 22.8% of Vietnam’s export market share, and experiencing a 174.0% increase. Following were India with 12,812 tons (4.9%, up 4.2%), UAE with 12,132 tons (4.6%, down 24.7%), and the Philippines with 8,021 tons (3.0%, up 27.5%). In the Americas, which held a 22.8% market share, exports increased by 0.3%, with the United States being the second-largest market for Vietnamese pepper, reaching 54,271 tons (20.5%, down 0.8%) compared to the previous year.

Exports to European markets accounted for 19.5%, showing a 1.4% decrease from the previous year. Major export markets included Germany with 9,216 tons (3.5%, down 4.5%), the Netherlands with 7,946 tons (3.0%, down 1.9%), Russia with 5,490 tons (2.1%, down 12.7%), and the UK with 4,923 tons (1.9%, down 3.0%). Exports to Turkey, France, and Spain increased, while exports to Ireland decreased by 75.8%, reaching 1,194 tons. Exports to Africa increased by 7.8%, with Egypt reaching 4,247 tons (up 23.5%), South Africa with 2,408 tons (up 17.0%), and Senegal with 2,372 tons (up 41.1%). Major markets for white pepper exports included the United States with 3,759 tons, Germany with 3,324 tons, China with 2,828 tons, the Netherlands with 2,663 tons, and Thailand with 2,307 tons.

Also in 2023, Vietnam imported a total of 26,538 tons of various types of pepper, with 24,903 tons of black pepper and 1,635 tons of white pepper. Compared to 2022, the import volume decreased by 27.7%.

The main pepper-supplying countries to Vietnam included:

  • Brazil: 16,598 tons, holding 62.5% of the market share and increasing by 31.6% compared to the previous year.
  • Cambodia: 3,763 tons, representing 14.2%, and decreasing by 71.7%.
  • Indonesia: 3,237 tons, capturing 12.2%, and decreasing by 37.6%.
